Dr. Michael Layton
Dr. Layton is a resident of Bismarck Arkansas and holds a baccalaureate in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. He has also completed postgraduate studies and holds a doctorate in Education.
Dr. Layton sculpts primally, but not exclusively in wood. Most sculptures are carved in wood that is native to the state of Arkansas such as Black Walnut, Catalpa and Butternut. The grain patterns and color of these native woods gives character and warmth to a sculpture and is incorporated into the subject itself.
All sculptures are executed without the aid of any modern power tools. Substitution of the mallet and gouge by high speed power tools can never attain the warmth and feel of a sculpture in the "classic" style.
Subject matter is very diverse, but historical figures, such as Native Americans and Civil War figures, are some of the many favorites of the artist. Many hours of research is performed prior to working on a sculpture so that they are historically accurate as well as aesthetically pleasing.
The artist will do commissions upon request, of many different types of subject matter, and some select originals in wood, can have a mold made directly from the composition that can be cast in a limited addition in bronze.
